I am a state and national award-winning photojournalist from Fredericksburg, Virginia. For three decades, I have documented the region as a staff photographer for The Free Lance-Star newspaper, where hard work and long hours taught me how to handle any situation.

I feel connected to the people I’m photographing. That’s how great pictures are made. Without fail, I tear up during the wedding vows at every wedding I photograph.

I am a sucker for any assignment or wedding where I have the opportunity to travel.

When I’m not documenting the lives of others, I am busy being a wife and mom. For awhile, I was also a student, returning to Mary Washington College in the midst of working and raising a family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

I met my husband Steve while I was on a river safety assignment for The Free Lance-Star. It was not love at first sight. In fact, I found him annoying. But within six months, I’d changed my mind. Steve is one of the smartest and most hard-working and considerate men I’ve ever known.

Our younger son Luke, has his father’s penchant for jumping feet-first into everything, whether skiing on the slopes or behind his desk at school. He’s the kid who enjoys being in front of the group leading the way.

Our son, Sam, is more reserved and quiet. But he takes after his dad when it comes to being kind and working hard.

We share our home in downtown Fredericksburg with an Australian shepherd, Stella, who is known to jump 6-foot fences to chase a squirrel.

Each summer, our family spends two weeks in Tunk Lake, Maine, watching the Milky Way, hiking the glacial mountains, harvesting blueberries and eating pounds of lobsters. We spend a week each winter in the Florida Keys, soaking up the sunshine, snorkeling the coral reefs, exploring the remote islands, and stuffing ourselves with local seafood.

But my favorite moments are the quiet ones close to home — enjoying a good breakfast or a glass of wine in the flicker of our outdoor fireplace.
